Parks and Recreation Department Volunteer of the Year
Each year the Layton City Parks and Recreation Department
coordinates with many different groups and individuals who serve as volunteers
in a variety of capacities within the Department. From youth coaches, citizen committee
members, specialized service projects, special events, and many more; these
volunteers are greatly appreciated. Many
of the programs ran through the Parks and Recreation Department would not be
possible without these individuals who are willing to contribute their time,
energy, and special skill-sets. Each
November the Parks and Recreation Department gives special recognition to an
individual or organization for their outstanding volunteer service. This year, the Layton City Parks and
Recreation Department would like to honor department volunteer Michael (Mike)
Trent as the 2020 Volunteer of the Year.
Mr. Trent has volunteered with the Parks and Recreation Department since 2017, when he served as Assistant Regional Commissioner for the American Youth Soccer Association (AYSO) Region 239, which encompasses the greater Layton area. Mr. Trent served as Assistant Regional Commissioner for the 2017 season, and then Regional Commissioner for the 2018, and 2019 AYSO seasons. The AYSO volunteer position of Regional Commissioner functions as the liaison between the local AYSO region and Layton City, and is responsible to manage the day-to-day business of the region. Including the coordination of approximately 1,400 participants each year and an average of 200 volunteers. In January 2020, Mr. Trent was appointment Area Commissioner for AYSO in charge of coordination between local AYSO regions in Davis, Weber, and Box Elder counties, as well as some regions in Western Wyoming.
During his time as regional commissioner, Mr. Trent was integral in coordinating AYSO recreation soccer league play and field usage in Layton City. He worked closely with the Parks and Recreation Department to ensure field usage and a high standard of league management. During his tenure, Mr. Trent was instrumental in the advancement of the AYSO EXTRAS program that serves as a stepping-stone for players who want to explore a more competitive brand of soccer without the full expense and commitment of a club or competitive team.
In addition to his volunteer services to the Parks and Recreation Department and local soccer community, Mr. Trent maintains a full-time job, a full-time family, and is a certified soccer coach and referee. Mr. Trent has lived in Layton City with his wife, Robin, and their two children for almost 15 years. A truly dedicated individual with a heart of gold and a passion for what he does. Layton City would like to thank Mr. Trent for the hard work he has given to the local recreation soccer community and the Parks and Recreation Department.
